A skid-steer, is a small, rigid-frame, engine-powered machine with lift arms used to attach a wide variety of labour-saving tools or attachments.
Skid-steer loaders are typically four-wheel vehicles with the wheels mechanically locked in synchronization on each side.
The left-side drive wheels can be driven independently of the right-side drive wheels.
The wheels normally have no separate steering mechanism and hold a fixed straight alignment on the body of the machine.
By driving the left and right wheel pairs at different speeds, the machine turns by skidding, or dragging its wheels across the ground.
The extremely rigid frame and strong wheel bearings stop the torsional forces caused by this dragging movement from damaging the machine.
The high ground friction produced by skid steers can tear up soft or fragile road surfaces.
These can be made into low ground friction by using specially designed wheels.
Skid-steer loaders are able to do zero-radius, “pirouette” turning, which makes them very flexible and valuable for projects that require a compact, agile loader.
Skid-steer loaders are sometimes come with tracks instead of the wheels, and such a loader is known as a multi-terrain loader.
The lift arms in these machines are alongside the driver with the pivot points behind the driver’s shoulders.
Modern skid-steers have fully enclosed cabs and other features for operator protection.
It can transfer material from one location to another, carry material in its bucket or load material into a truck or trailer.
The standard bucket of many skid-steers can be replaced with a variety of specialized buckets or attachments that are powered by the loader’s hydraulic system.
-Wood chipper machine.
Some models of bobcat now also have an automatic attachment changer system.
This allows an operator to change between a variety of terrain handling, shaping, and leveling tools without having to get out of the machine.
A hydraulic control mechanism is used to latch onto the attachments.
Hydraulic supply lines to powered attachments may be routed so that the couplings are near the cab.
The driver does not need to get out of the machine to connect or disconnect those supply lines.
A skid-steer loader can sometimes be used instead of a large excavator by digging a hole from the inside.
The skid-steer loader first digs a ramp leading to the edge of the excavation.
It then uses the ramp to transfer material out of the hole.
The skid-steer loader reshapes the ramp by making it steeper and longer as the excavation deepens.
This method is especially useful for digging under a structure where overhead clearance does not allow for the boom of a large excavator.
There are lots of different backhoe attachments available for skid-steers.
These are better for digging in a small area and can work in the same environments.
Other jobs may consist of transporting raw material around a job site, or assisting in the rough grading process.
